DBA/Ops I

Summary

The DBA/Ops I role is responsible for planning, installing, configuring and deploying databases using the organization's standards in both clustered and non-clustered environments. The primary purpose is to support production SQL Server 2005 and 2008 databases that drive the business. In addition, they are responsible for supporting internal databases and providing assistance to developers in the proper use of all database technologies. This includes database day-to-day operational support of the development database instances within the corporation.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Maintain internal and external SQL Server 2005 and 2008 databases so that consistent performance is obtained
  • Monitor the performance of the databases and T-SQL code and provide suggestions for performance improvements
  • Perform database backups and restores to meet project goals and disaster recovery requirements
  • Understand and manage the security within the database so that all regulatory rules and guidelines are followed and complied with
  • Coordinate activities with other departments to meet project objectives
  • Mentor developers in proper and optimal coding techniques
  • Write utility stored procedures to assist in day to day activities
  • To be included in the "on-call" rotation should the need arise to help during non-business hours.
  • Document procedures and practices

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Provide backup support for internal domain and network servers
  • Provide backup support for corporate web site administration
  • Perform capacity planning tasks and provide recommendations for changes needed to meet project requirements
  • Keep skill sets current to provide ideas and guidance to improve operational efficiencies
  • Other duties as determined based on business needs.

Skills

  • SQL Server 2005 database administration with strong troubleshooting skills and T-SQL understanding
  • Microsoft Server 2003 Administration with some active directory experience
  • Full understanding of Microsoft office applications (Word, Excel, Project)
  • Clustering setup and modification is a plus
  • Business Intelligence and OLAP setup and configuration is a plus
  • Replication and database mirroring is a plus
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Documentation and knowledge transfer skills

Education/Training

Bachelors Degree in Information Technology or Equivalent training

Experience

  • 2-6 years of progressive experience and working knowledge of SQL Server
  • Database tuning and troubleshooting experience in both production and development environments
  • Strong knowledge of all the standard SQL Server tools

Reporting Structure

The DBA/Ops I reports to the Director, Information Systems. This individual will work closely with other peer level and senior Software Engineers, database/network administrators, various management/non-management individuals within the company, Healthation system vendors and Healthation customers.
